1st (Royal) Dragoons Uniform Button (assumed)

1st (Royal) Dragoons Uniform Button

14.1mm domed gilt coatee button. Impressed design composed of the letters ‘R D’ and a royal crown within a circle. Button is closed to the reverse with a plate with two holes in it. Maker mark is weak and indistinct, but probably is ‘S. Firmin Strand’ If this is the mark then the button would date to the period 1771-1780.

  1. Yes a ‘golden oldie’. I expected to see this one in Parkyn’s ‘Shoulder-Belt Pates and Buttons’ but no joy. I haves since then found an almost identical button illustrated in Gwen Squire’s ‘Buttons – A Guide for Collectors’, plate 11, which he describes as ‘1st Royal Dragoons – Officers’ Gilt c 1840′
