Liverpool Pals....
© IWM (INS 7404)
King's (Liverpool) Regiment, 17th - 20th Battalions, Liverpool Pals. All those who volunteered before 16 October 1914 were given the silver badge as a personal gift from Lord Derby. The eagle and child are taken from the heraldic crest of the Stanleys, the Earls of Derby which shows the eagle and child in its mediaeval form. His motto 'Sans changer' was also adopted by the Liverpool Pals. The Liverpool Pals battalions served in 89th Brigade until 1918, part of 30th Division which was the first of the Pals Divisions. The silver badge shows an eagle carrying a child in a small boat above a crown. Underneath is a scroll with the motto SANS CHANGER. Pair of lugs to reverse. http://media.iwm.org.uk/iwm/mediaLib...d%2520insignia http://media.iwm.org.uk/iwm/mediaLib...d%2520insignia http://media.iwm.org.uk/iwm/mediaLib...d%2520insignia

I believe the child is in the eagle's nest not a small boat!

Paul,
You are right it certainly looks more like a cradle but heraldically according to Wiki just a well made eagle's nest? http://medievalromance.bodleian.ox.a...Stanley_family Anyway not a boat but perhaps a Moses basket? Tim

The heraldic description is
“On a chapeau gules, turned up ermine, an eagle, wings extended, or, preying on a child proper, swaddled gules, in a cradle laced or.” Which would appear to be contrary to the nest story !? |

Typically that you cannot find something when you want to but someone ( if my memory is correct ) in a 1950`s edition of the Kings Regimental magazine made the error of referring to the bird on the Stanley Crest as a " Liver Bird".

Rudely referred to in my part of Lancashire as a "Mersey shite hawk on a bin", I of course do not hold with such rude references to Liverpool.

Whoever designed that crest had obviously never set eyes on an eagle. It looks more like a very ugly cormorant about to perform CPR on a stoat.

Eagles ( including Liverpool ones ) and Liver Birds
This is the article from the July 1948 Kingsman magazine that I was thinking of in the earlier post above.
It seems with hindsight, unbelievable that someone could have written " They were the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th City of Liverpool Battalions and were given as their cap badge "The Liver Bird". Rather supports the contention that you should never take as gospel anything you read, even in specialist publications. P.B.
