Default RNE grenade and anodised US officers cap badge by Gaunt

Can anyone please tell me what unit the rich gilt grenade with the letters RNE on the scroll is for ? It is something I have seen before but cannot recall what unit it was used by.

The second item I find rather interesting, it is a United States Army officers badge with two spike and screw post fitting but it is anodised and has the makes name J.R. Gaunt London on the back. I have seen this badge with the Gaunt makers before but in metal and whilst I can understand that there would have been a fair number of American Officers in this country in the 1950`s I would not have thought it would have been worth the effort by Gaunt to make an anodised version.

Any comments on the second badge appreciated.

Thanks

P.B.

Peter, The gilt grenade is RHODESIA & NAYASSALAND ENGRS, some times confused with Royal New Zealand Engrs.
The USA badge is one I may now have to add to my A/A collection. Plenty of US officers in UK (and Europe) so it would make sense for the US military to order and buy in country. No?
Jerry.

Thanks Jerry,

I knew it wasn't New Zealand.

With regard to the anodised American badge, I would have thought that US made examples might have been available at the PX at bigger bases but perhaps Gaunts supplied the PX`s in this country.

Peter

Smile USAAF badge

Peter,

I have a similar badge which was die-struck without a makers name. This badge was found in a hut on Little Walden airfield when the place was de-commissioned post 1945.

The badge I have posted shows some wear on the high points.

Default Little Walden airfield

Bess,

I think you may be a few years too late, this badge was found in a hut by a guy just after WWII, he gave it to a friend to sell on ebay and I bought it.

The friend turned out to be my cousins husband, it's a small world . . !

Just to finish off this thread, I put the anodised US badge on E bay and it sold a week or more ago and I believe the purchaser is happy with the item, thenyesterday I got the following E mail from those very nice people at E bay:

Hello probemil,

We appreciate your cooperation.
Thanks,

eBay

Please don't reply to this message. It was sent from an address that doesn't accept incoming email.

I don't really know what to say except to say if only they ( Ebay ) went to the same trouble with the purveyors of dodgy badges how much better E bay would be for collectors.

I was the buyer of this badge and I am more then happy with it and as Peter did, I got a e mail also, from ebay:-

"We had to remove this listing from the site and you're not required to complete the transaction. If you've already sent payment, the sale should process as normal and you don't have anything to worry about. If you have any questions about delivery, please check tracking or contact your seller. If you run into any trouble along the way eBay is here to help. Please visit the Resolution Centre to help resolve any problems you may encounter."

Badge has been received and is in my collection.

Jerry.

Peter, Have you sent an e-mail to Gaunt? It'd be interesting to see their reaction and could possibly lead to them going after fakes?

Rgds, Thomas.

Thomas,

I wasn't going to bother but I have now sent Gaunts an E mail asking them to let me know how they think the listing violated their intellectual property rights.

I will post details of any reply I get.

Peter

Gentlemen,
Well strictly speaking all Patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets are "intellectual property" - however the context here is odd as it would seem to suggest that 'Gaunts' would appear to be representing to EBAY that the badge in question is in some way counterfeit and utilising their trademark name upon it to garner some kind of false provenance. Curious that they should choose this particular badge, which is often seen and does quite legitimately bear the makers name. In fact the Gaunt name is often quoted when selling militaria on EBAY - it is descriptive and an inherent part of the insignia identity and age.

I believe that some here have attempted to make genuine enquiries with Gaunts owners today and found them 'eccentric' to deal with. Othersd may be able to elaborate here . . .

Regards to all

Bess
