Solid Suffolk cap badge
I recently bouught a solid Suffolk Regt cap badge with a lob lot of badges, has anyone any idea if these were issued, worn, economy versions or just out and out fakes.
The one that I bought had the slider missing. Opinions welcomed. Rob |

Go to my album and compare it to mine from the 1940s.

Many thanks Alan, I seem to remember this badge had cropped up on the forum somewhere and your badge has provenance.
I think this may be from a batch that were made in the early 1940's maybe as an economy measure before the plastic badges were commissioned. I would love to see an example being worn. Rob |

Hi Bob
I also have one in my collection. I am sure they're genuine. There is one in Wilkinson's book number 416. Regards Neil |

My own view is that they are Ww1 badges made for commercial sale or by sub-contractors who did not void the badges to save time or make up for a lack of specialized skills. The existence of an unvoided first pattern Manchester regt badge reinforces the view that they were pre 1920.
My Suffolks was collected in the 40's but could have been made much earlier. |

From what I've learnt about badge production in the 1st WW, I'd be inclined to agree with Alan. There are many many more 1st rather than 2nd WW odd variants.

I have never seen any photographs of these being worn in WW2 but the Suffolk Regiment archive has a portrait photograph of 2/Lt Kilner of 1/5th Suffolk, taken before embarking for Gallipoli, and his cap and collar badges are all solid bronzed OSD.
