Military Foot Police WW1

Hi All

Does anybody have a "Military Foot Police" badge from the pre Great War period?

I am interested because this design did not last very long..... and changed to KK1030 Wreath & Cypher "Military Police" therefore the first design would of had a single manufacturer.

Here is my contribution. While I collect Colonial Police badges, when this one turned up , thought that it was interesting . It looks fairly old and used, but I guess that the fakers can achieve that impression if they are skilled enough.

What do you reckon to this then It looks like a "real" MFP Royal Crest with a fake 1RD scroll.... probably with a false slider as well? If not then the scroll definatley looks like a later addition?

What I believe is a genuine WW2 1RD..... look how the scroll is attached and compare to the one above (top).

Going by the K&K picture no its not ...

KK1029 (Below) .... allegedly ..... not sure though Look at the "POLICE" flaws in your scroll and the scroll below.... Identicle? Different Royal Crest but identicle scroll?

I have superimposed the badge above onto the badge shown in K&K and you can see what I mean.... the crest looks ok (but still a fake IMO - repro)..... the scroll is definatly not correct

Hello all,
if anyone can get to the KOSB museum in Berwick on Tweed there is an old badge collection on display upstairs, among the collection (am afraid I cannot remember the benefactor) there is an example of the Military Foot Police badge.
I did some work in the Barracks mess there about eight years ago and was able to have a quick look around.

I used to find badges when digging on beaches and now on fairs but that's not enough I believe now, need to learn more about badges ! Thanks for the lesson...
I don't have the K&K book but I will try to get one one day.

This is really intersting..... I have overlayed a cWW2 1RD (picture taken off centre) over the KK1029 picture and look at the result. Does this indicate that the firm who made the pre WW1 MFP badge updated the scroll for the late 1930's 1RD badge - or was this 1RD badge made around the same period with x3 loops?

I was told some time ago that there is a badge for the `Military Mounted Police`. Wonder if anyone else has heard of this badge and whether there is an example of it out in the ether or is this just another wives tale?

KK1031

There had been an office of the Provost Marshal with the ability to arrest and punish soldiers for desertion, plundering or outrage stretching back centuries. These were formed on an ad hoc basis and were disbanded when campaigns and wars were over. Wellington somewhat formalised the system into a staff corps with responsbility of keeping order in the ranks during the Napoleonic War. This force was technically disbanded at the end of the war, although it did continue for a while to police the occupied territories of France until Bourbon rule could be reestablished.



A similar force was raised to serve during the Crimean War. However, this force was to prove more durable. Senior NCOs from several cavalry regiments were invited to form the new service. They had to be of good character with at least five years of unblemished service. When the Crimean War ended, the unit was thought to be useful enough to reconstitute back in Britain and it was billeted at Aldershot.

It is said that the familiar red cap was designed by the wife of a Provost Marshal serving with the unit during the Egyptian campaign in 1882. Another theory was that it was descended from a red scarf tied around the right shoulder used during the Napoleonic Campaigns to identify one another.
