I just remembered a thread on another forum which shows members of the Parachute Regt making their own badges. They had worn the AAC badge and when the new PR cap badge was introduced they couldn't get theirs quick enough!

During the North African campaign in WW2 there must have been a few made then ..... all the Regiments that were involved in that will have cast copies probably made in Tunis or Tripoli etc? You can add Greece & Palestine to a possible place of manufacture as well from 1945 to 48?

Yeomanry sandcast
Two more sandcast badges of the Loyal Suffolk Hussars and the Dorset Yeomanry, both units served in WWI in the Middle East, the Loyal Suffolk Hussars at Gallipoli, Egypt and Palestine and the Dorset Yeomanry at Gallipoli, Egypt, Palestine and Syria.
As these are areas where "bazaar made badges" were available and a good distance from Britain there is a chance IMO that they could well have been made as replacements for lost badges. Rob

Sandcast Devons
Without wishing to upstage the other Rob, here are two of my sandcast Devonshire Regt badges. The badge with the Victorian crown is IMO well made, the KC badge has been repaired by me putting an AligariUP slider on to it, this may not be the original slider as they came with other badges.
The Devonshire Regt Btns served in WWI in India, Egypt and Mesopotamia. The 16th Btn was formed I think in late 1916 in Egypt from the Royal first Devon and Royal North Devon Yeo. Regts. Possibly this may account for the number of sandcast Devonshire badges to be found. Comments appreciated about these badges. Rob

Here are some more RB examples.
Badge 1 was a recent cheap buy from EBay in brass that I bronzed as a gap filler, not really sure what to make of it. Badge 2 was also purchased as a possible OSD but I'm not happy to give it the benefit of the doubt. It is a nice little badge in the hand though. It looks to have replacement? loops and there is a rough area to the casting on the rear, this together with its small size leads me to think that it is a theatre made badge. Badge 3 is a locally ground dug example in silver that Dave C has since kindly re-looped for me. All comments welcome. Ry Last edited by Charlie585; 21-11-13 at 02:24 PM.

Cambridgeshire officers silver cast badge
I bought this badge with a collection of mainly Suffolk Regt badges, cloth and metal. Interestingly this has been cast from an other ranks cap badge which has been polished on the high points to such an extent that the shield is almost smooth.
I have included a picture of the scroll at the bottom showing the join which has faithfully been reproduced in the casting. This could have been made in South Africa or India as the 1st and 2nd Btns were on their way to Singapore in 1941-42. As usual comments welcome. Rob Last edited by Sonofacqms; 20-03-13 at 08:54 PM.

Sandcast Royal Scots and Lincolnshire
Two more sandcast badges probably of WWI vintage. The Royal Scots 1st Btn having served in India and the 4th at Gallipoli.
The Lincolnshire Regt 1st/4th Btn serving in Egypt and the 12th Labour Btn in India. This badge had no fixings when I bought it and I soldered loops onto it, although where the slider was on the original badge it can still be seen. Rob

Two more sandcast from WWII
The Royal Horse Artillery and Queens West Surrey Regt, both served in the 7th Armoured Division in the Western Desert, so these could have been made in the Middle East as replacement badges.

RAF sandcast
Here's an RAF sandcast badge that is shown against a normal size RAF cap badge, as shown it is considerably smaller and I would be interested in finding out whether it was made from an impression of an existing badge or was made from a specially made mould.

I can't tell you much about this one. I’ve had it for about ten years and used it as a place holder until I got a "proper” Somerset Light Infantry badge. I’m a bit embarrassed to say I had no idea that it would be of interest to anyone, and it took me this long to find it again.
It appears to be of blackened brass.
