Ambulance shoulder titles
Last night I watched the classic film "Carry on Doctor" and the ambulance crew were wearing yellow on black shoulder titles which I have always assumed to be Civil defence.
So were they ever worn by Ambulance crews or is this just artistic license? Rob |

You can never say never, but most (if not all) of the post 1948 County and Borough Ambulance Services wore "named" titles. I would suggest that the costume people for this film have simple used the non-specific CD titles.

Interestingly, I've never seen a 'correct' wartime ARP ambulance in any Home Front TV drama e.g. Goodnight Mr Tom - they're always 1930s white hospital ambulances - cheaper to hire than make up the correct wartime grey converted van versions. |
