Herefordshire Regiment FSC
I purchased two FSCs this morning along with some accompanying paperwork. They are reputed to have come from a local house clearance. One cap, dated 1940 is unbadged, the other has a blackened Herefordshire Regiment cap badge. I asked the vendor if the badge was original to the cap or had been added and he replied that it was on the cap and that he thought that it had been on for some time as the G.S. buttons were also blackened.
Strangely enough the paperwork relates to a soldier in the 274 (Northumberland Hussars) L.A.A. Battery R.A. He lived just across the Herefordshire border in Presteign. Can anyone please tell me if there is a special reason why the cap badge is blackened or if it was usual wartime practice for regiments with WM cap badges? |

Nice Universal Pattern Field Service Cap.
I look for signs that the badge has left an indent on the outside and also look at the slider area on the inside for an impression and/or staining showing it has been there a long time.

There are signs that it has been on the cap for some time but as always with house clearance items you never know if the family put granddad's cap badge on father's FSC when little Johnny was playing soldiers in the 1950's. You often see medals that have come from clearances that have the wrong ribbons as they were put on many years after the recipient died.
There may also be a Home Guard connection with the Herefordshire Regiment cap badge as there is some paperwork for the Kington platoon, H.G. |

The Home Guard connection is interesting, I know we are talking about black rather than bronze but I have heard of Home Guard officers on being commissioned painting their cap badges bronze instead of buying an osd example.
I also seem to recall mention of Home Guard badges being painted black but never come across any real evidence of that being done. P.B.

I have to do some further research into the two names that I have from the paperwork but here is the Home Guard link.

Can I ask what are the names?
My grandfather joined-up with the 1st Herefords in 1939 and was then posted to the newly formed 2nd Herefords before the war broke out. I have been researching his service and have some information relating a number of gents in the 2nd Herefords, most of whom went onto serve with other regiments/corps. |

The names were James and Henry Lloyd. James served with the 274 L.A.A. (Northumberland Hussars). R.A. until he was wounded. He then served with the 1st battalion Herefordshire Regiment Home Guard.

Have now had a look, but can only find reference to a Kenneth Meacham Lloyd, who served with the 2nd Herefords.
