Marksman Crossed Muskets Cloth Arm Badge
Can anyone help me with this cloth arm badge. Not crossed SMLE's, but what appear to be muskets. Only bits of the original scarlet backing left, but the bullion embroidery is in very good nick. As such what era would it be from and for what dress?
In proper Forum disclosure I do declare that the badge is not in my collecting field and I will eventually put it up for sale. Thanks Mark |

Hello,
I cannot give an exact date but Muskets can be seen worn in photos into the 1890's. Earlier ones had slings and then of course onto rifles. I collect such things but in its condition I wouldnt buy it, but someone might if it was cheap. treagrds

Hi Mark,
They can be seen from about 1858 in Australia, red being for infantry and engineers. The muskets appear with and without slings, my notes suggest the crossed muskets without slings were the later version, although both were worn until the beginning of the 20th Century over here. Regards, Keith |

Thank you both for your replies and help. Even though it is not something I would ordinarily collect myself it does add to my knowledge. Appreciated. Mark |
