Default Unknown CV buttons

Hi folks,

Well a wet bank holiday and it is time for a trawl through the 'unknowns' box.

I have these two buttons, which have remained a mystery for some time. Not convinced they are even military. They could be Livery etc. and I suppose the blackened version could even be a 'mourning' version of the button.

My first thoughts were "CV" were roman numerals for "105", but this doesn't look like anything for 105th Regt of Foot. Of course it could be C?????? Volunteers or something else completely different.
The use of a Guelphic type crown and the suspended sheep at the bottom of the button is another puzzle.

Blackened Mounted (2 piece) version : 19.4mm /JENNENS & Co. LONDON

Gilt Mounted (2 piece) version : 13.3mm / JENNENS . LONDON

As always your suggestions and help are much appreciated.

Regards

Ian

Usually the order (golden fleece?) is a good indication of the origin of the button. Could it be European?

After a brief search:
I guess it is from a Gaunt / Jennens sample book.
It is a court button to a Spanish pretender.
The military buttons from the first Carlist war (1833-1840) have a royal crown over the letters C.V. (in various styles), but not the order of the Golden Fleece.

It is too nice to be in an 'unknowns box'.

Hi Btns,

A great bit of research there, to identify the button - thank you.

As you say, they are very nice buttons and it is probably that which drew me to them in the first place.

Many thanks again.

Ian

Hello Ian

I think btns has got the right answer. Looking at the button it would seem to be a Gothic letter 'C' and the Roman numeral 'V' rather than the number '105' , so it is likely to be Carlos V (or something similar).

Two very nice buttons and I agree with btns, much too good to be in an unknowns box!

Regards
Roger

Hi Roger,

Thanks for those thoughts.
I really must pay more attention in future. I hadn't even noticed the difference in the fonts used for the "C" and "V".

All the best

Ian
