Medical staff button Firmin & sons Of Dublin
Good afternoon
Victorian medical staff button. When did Firmin make buttons in Dublin? I can't find info on this. Many thanks Martyn |

As far as I'm aware Firmin did not manufacture items in Dublin, they probably had an office and or agent there.

Many thanks Dave. I can only find one more with a backstamp marking for Dublin on the web at the moment. I have found out that they were based at 2 Dawson Street Dublin in 1862 but can't find anything else. Does anybody know when they stopped using that premises?

Hello Martyn
I agree with Dave in as much as I also believe Firmin only had an office in Dublin, not a manufacturing works. A backmark of 'Firmin & Sons Ld Dublin" must be after 1876 when they became a limited company. The Dublin address on a backmark is not all that common but it is not rare either for that matter. The attached photo is of a Firmin wrapper on a set of buttons (livery unfortunately!) giving their address as " ..... & 2, Dawson St Dublin". I believe they moved out of 13 Conduit Street in about 1879 and in 1886 they were giving a Dublin address of "73 Dame Street". It would seem that your button would date from between about 1876 and 1886, give or take a couple of years. So far I have been unable to establish when the Dublin office was set up. Roger |

Many thanks is nice to have a Dublin backstamp in the collection and the button is very pleasing.
It's good to share information on this site and I am learning a lot about buttons that I haven't researched until recently. Regards Martyn |
