When worn by the regiment they wouldn't have been silvered, this has been silvered later, I'm not sure if this was done for part of a display or perhaps for use by one of the militia battalions. I have seen other examples of silvered 51's so its not unique, some with better silvering than others. Oddly I've also seen 43rd wbc's also silvered.
I do suspect that some of the 51st wbc's (of a slightly different pattern) were worn by the regiment post 1881, with the "51st" removed, as I have recorded a half dozen examples, but these were not silvered. I've a non silvered example of your wbc on my web page, http://jeffreyhayes.com/wbc/2017/05/...hire-regiment/ The maker on yours is J & co. |

Thank you,
There was some dirt on the surface which I just remove easily, and looking closely it is indeed silvered over brass! Kind regards Chay |

Yes I believe it is indeed made by Jennings ! It is heavily silver plated but over time there are areas where it has been rubbed off but not much! Kind regards Chay |

Jennens !
Well known for the quality of their products. Founded in 1800, after serious losses they were bought by Gaunt in 1925 As far as their cap and collar badges (from the 1890s) go - they only made officer's badges ! Did they ever make OR items ?????? Is your buckle an officer's or OR item ? Perhaps the silvering is a clue ! Their archives survive within the Gaunt archives in London and in Birmingham - it might be worthwhile looking through the material. |

Its a silvered officers, OR's was an all brass buckle with plain ends with 51 in centre pre 1871 (see my web page for an example). After 1871 it was replaced by the Dieu Et Mod Droit universal buckle.
