Good day folks

This hat is for sale in a local auction house. Is it just a fantasy or a a recognised form of headdress. I have asked for some more photos.

They saw service in the 2nd Boer war and from the pics it appears to be of the type from that period.

The badge wasnt introduced until 1908.

This pattern of badge was approved for the 20th Middlsex RVC, on 4th April 1895.

Slouch hats continued in wear for much of the Edwardian period after the Boer war ended.

I wonder where the version with the pointed down turned scroll ends belongs in the grand scope of things? It comes with loops and a shank so must be c.1905.

Been having a similar discussion offline this evening. This is one of those badges that seems a bit reluctant to give up its secrets. A bit of hard research required among the archives I reckon.

Not a question I can answer, I'm sorry to say. In addition, although we have the date it was approved, the date of its introduction is not something I've seen documented as yet.

Occasionally, we see badges being worn a long time in advance of official approval. Not an exact science, which is one of the aspects of the hobby that for me makes it so fascinating.

The slouch hat was worn by a variety of non regular units in my collecting interest including 6th V.B. Kings Liverpool Regiment, Liverpool Scottish, 5th ( Irish ) V.B. Kings Liverpool Regiment, Liverpool College OTC and Liverpool Institute OTC.
