Thank you all very much for your contributions to this thread. I think the most likely attribution for this badge is the 7th Fusiliers.
There would appear to be no badges or buttons issued by the Old Bailey itself; however I have managed to obtain a copy of the official guidebook to the court, issued in 1974, which lists the following uniformed officers being on permanent duty in the Courts:
City of London Police: 1 inspector, 3 sergeants, 23 constables.
Attendants: 80 – augmenting the normal police presence and the majority were stated to be former police officers (does this explain why they wore the CoL Police Reserve badge?) Their duties were to attend the courts and public galleries.
H.M. Prison Officers: 23 + 1 Principal Officer – responsible for the custody of prisoners appearing before the Courts, including defendants on bail. One officer to each prisoner in the dock.
City Marshall: attended court on ceremonial occasions and wore a scarlet military style uniform with gilt buttons featuring the city coat of arms, of the same pattern as the Commissioner and Deput
