Default LRDG Badge on eBay

Prospective bidders beware.

A modern fake, and the seller is aware it is a fake...

Enjoy the hobby, Keith

Indeed, clearly this seller should be avoided.

Some people have rather more money than sense, £170 is an awful amount to simply throw away.

I contacted the seller. He knows full well what he’s doing.
Our conversation on eBay went like this, (quote):

Me: This Badge is fake

Seller: About 298% of every LRDG & Popski are !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no make that 450%

Me: And that’s an excuse to defraud why?????

Seller: You say its wrong, NO ONE else has, its returnable if not delighted as stated. In ten years when most collectors have gone upstairs and no new ones come in all this old rubbish will get thrown away anyway !!!!!!!!

Me: You really are special
You’re selling fakes, and you know you’re selling fakes.
I’ll be sending this conversation to eBay.

Seller: That goes for 70% of the stuff on todays market esp on ebay you'll be busy for a while !!
*END*

I will be passing this along to someone who I hope will take up the baton.
Kind regards,
Sean

Unbelievable. Theft and fraud are still theft and fraud when packaged differently...

I have had similar conversations with the seller, Dave Empson, and contacted eBay but to no avail. He also sells in various Essex/Suffolk/Norfolk auctions and when he has auction lots of fake LRDG items I have contacted the auctioneers, this with mixed success.

Due to his successful sale I expect a similar fake LRDG badge to be listed soon.

Keith

I believe that with such proof in correspondence, there should exists a "Black List" available for forum members and these sellers should be named and shamed!!

I’ve hit a brick wall with eBay. I had a contact in the Met Police who was a ‘spoc’ (Single Point of contact) with eBay for dealing with stolen vehicles and push bikes being advertised on eBay, but he’s moved on and the officer I spoke to today sounded interested, but confessed to not having a clue where to start or indeed having the time to deal with it amongst his current workload.

I’ve contacted eBay myself but not had a reply.
Has anyone reported an item on eBay before, and seen it removed?

I have the feeling that eBay don’t like taking anyone’s word for it over fake goods and (and my suspicions are stronger yet) they put and such report in the ‘too difficult box’. A cynic would also point out that sales = revenue too.

Perhaps the forum (as an internationally respected body) could approach eBay and foster some ‘clout’ when fakes are spotted??

Ive had items removed, for no good reason. Obsolete police badges. Ebay told me that they had been reported. I reported several of the same badges to see what would happen. Nothing, they all ran their course. It appears to be a random process. How ebay have an agreement with a long defunct police force to not allow their badges to be listed, lord only knows.

3 or 4 years ago, I sent a long and detailed complaint to The Met’s Arts and Antiques Squad, in respect of the bloke based in Blackpool, if I remember correctly, who was selling crap.
Unfortunately I can’t find the original letter, but in the missive, I mentioned that this seller was not only selling fake stuff, but belittling and besmirching the memories of those who had served etc.
Although, at the time, having been retired for 12 or so years, but being an ex Met bloke, fortunately, somehow or another, it appears that they acted on what I told them and I believe the information was passed onto the relevant Police Force who acted accordingly.
I don’t know the details of what action was taken or the official outcome was, but I seem to remember that he stopped trading under that seller’s name.
However, sometime later his crap re-appeared on ebay and still does on occasions.
Moral of the story is: it won’t stop; you/we won’t stop it; it’s a simple matter to offer the same garbage under a different name and ebay doesn’t give a flying ****, so long as they make money from the crap being peddled.
Regards
Brian

Under current SOPs I’d suggest this is in the Auction Fraud remit rather that MPS. Contact them perhaps?
