Default 148th Bde

Does anyone know what the "NM" actually stands for on the 148th Independent Infantry Bde's formation sign? Cole's and Rosignoli's books illustrate it but don't say what it means, and I haven't come across an explanation anywhere else.

Rolfi,
Is that because the battalions making up the brigade came from the North Midlands ?

Thanks, Rolfi.
P.B., I'll have a look in Joslen's books on WW2 orbats to see if the original units were Nth Midlands. According to Cole the bde eventually "became the pre-O.C.T.U. training establishment, located in South-Eastern Command".

Hello lettman, regarding your question I have a source that says that the 148th Brigade (of 49th West Riding Div. Northern Command) was made up in September 1939 of the 1st/5th Bn. The Leicestershire Regt., 1st/5th Bn. The Sherwood Foresters Regt. and the 8th Bn. The Sherwood Foresters Regt.
A second source says that "....The Brigade was redesignated and reorganised as an Independent Brigade Group on 14 November 1940, then on 25 July 1942 it was redesignated and reorganised as a Training Brigade for the pre-OCU training of all OCTU candidates for all arms in the UK except RAC, AA and Pay Corps".
Hopefully you did not know all already that and that it helps.
Jo

Many thanks for that, Voltigeur -- I found exactly that info in Joslen's 'Orders of Battle' books for WW2, probably just as you were posting. Great minds and all that . . . !
