Edinburgh Garrison Formation Sign
Good evening Gentlemen,
after several searches in my different reference books, I find absolutely nothing concerning the Edinburgh Garrison Formation Badge. it looks like it already existed during WWII but I have absolutely no date nor know who wore that badge. Could anyone help me please? Thank you very much. Best regards, Phil PS: enclosed a picture of a printed one. |

Edinburgh Garrison
From the WO publication "GHQ, Corps and Divisional Signs 1940" (as amended to mid 1941) the nearest sign listed is that of:
Edinburgh Area (A white St Andrew's cross on a green background). With the addition of a lion superimposed on the saltire this became the formation sign of East Scotland District. I believe that the sign you illustrate was introduced in the 1950s. |

I should have added that the Edinburgh Garrison sign is not (not) mentioned in Badges on Battledress (Third Edition - 1953) by Howard Cole. So there's a reasonable chance it was introduced after that date.

Thanks for this info Mike, I was about to buy this edition of Cole's book to check
So it's at least post 1953... |

Scottish Command sent the proposed design for the Edinburgh Area sign to the War Office on 9th March 1959. They noted that green was the colour used by the army to designate an area and blue and yellow were traditional colours "of the Lothian and Border area". The War Office approved the sign on 15th April 1959. Details from National Archives file WO32/18820.
It was presumably worn until the army gave up battledress. Postwarden |
