Default Who, What, Where, When? #2

Thought I'd share this recent find... any ideas as to the precise location, unit, date etc., would be brilliant. Hoping to sell on at some point.

Many thanks,

JT

I would go with Artillery..... In India.... early 1900s (some SA Medals there I think?). Those Nellies should be a giveaway to a known Garrison etc?

Royal Regiment of Artillery some time between 1880 and 1926, maybe more precise if you can work out what the medals are.

JT, the two men seated front row, 3rd and 4th from the left, appear to be wearing the 1897 Diamond Jubilee Medal as are a couple of the others. A lack of any 2nd Boer War medals in the group would put the date between 1897 and about 1900 by my reckoning.

H,

Medal ribbon ID definitely not my strong suit, so really appreciate your thoughts on this.

Many thanks.

You're too kind. A "no brainer" actually. See a picture of a gate and elephants and search for "elephant gate"! Simples! Mike

Delhi, Elephant Gate, Delhi

The back of this postcard reads, “The Interior of DELHI or ELEPHANT GATE. Built by Shah Jahan in 1638. Both the elephants are erected now, and remain the old ones with statues of the great Rajput warriors Jaimal &Fatta”. This postcard depicts the Southern gate to the Red Fort called the Delhi Gate because it faces the city of Delhi. Two elephants are seen flanking the gate but they are not original. These statues were commissioned by Lord Curzon in 1903 to replace the originals destroyed by Shah Jahan’s successor Aurangzeb two centuries before. It is said the original elephant statues were larger than life and were ridden by sculptures of the Rajpso hard ut warriors Jaimal and Fatta.

Post 1903 certainly, not just because of the date of the Delhi Gate, but that pair of medals IS a South African pair of Queen's and King's South Africa. Scale of issue means you wouldn't have got a KSA with "South Africa 1902" in 1902...
