Pattern books
Useful looking material. Are these books deposited in a public archive anywhere (War Memorial, Canberra?)
Are you aware of any similar books covering Australian cadet insignia? Thanks, Stephen. |

I was shown a 'Pattern Book' of British Army Tartans where each tartan was an A4 swath to show the repeating pattern with label attach as to the 'Pattern Number' 'Description' 'NSN' & 'Drawing Number' - Unit of issue being a bolt for bulk issue only.

Excellent, bc -- thank you. I'd also like to know where they're located!

Many of them are probably in private hands, probably kept after by the successful tenderer after the completion of the contract, although they were supposed to be handed back. I'm not sure that Defence keeps this stuff, it just goes into the burner when it is superseded.
Same with a change in design for a badge, etc, the new appendix is inserted in the MGO Spec as an Issue with a number, for instance Issue 9, and the previous appendix is destroyed. The replacement of bc's MGO Spec 348 on titles, winter, embroidered, was MGO Spec 5348 on 19 April 1977, which was the rewrite to Metric and extended into the 1980s with amendments. Keith |

hi guys
these are but a few of the items from a private collection from a govt manufacturer who closed about 20 years ago. I think I've shown Keith a few other items from the collection, I think in regards to shoulder titles and how they were made? will try and find the other pics I've taken of them over the years and get some further pics when I can. I haven't come across any cadet items but will ask bc |

Pricless!
That Mil Spec production information is (in my view) nearly priceless.
The fact that the Army does not really bother preserving that information systematically, has always astounded me. It's up to each of us to ferret it out and to and preserve (it where we can) as a record to tell the story of former service personnel, for the benefit of their decedents and for future generations generally. Personally, I hope you write a book with the aid of that reference material... but I do know what a trial that process can be. Thanks heaps for sharing! Best regards Mark
