Really, £50 would certainly be cause for concern these days!

A good one went recently on Cultmans eBay site for less than £38, no doubt bought by another dealer. Probably up for twice the price now.

£38 is a nowhere sort of price, any original is worth rather more these days.

Hi Lancer,

For a genuine 5th Royal Irish Lancers £50 would be a good deal.

They seem to be circa £75 (for slidered versions) on dealers lists, often more for looped ones - sold as Victorian/Edwardian.

As Tony says there are bargains out there but you may be waiting a long while! Someone got very, very lucky at 38 quid.

On bi-metal badges where one metal has been overlaid onto the other braze holes are small slots/holes in the metal at the back of the badge.

Do you have a picture of the badge you’ve been offered?

Cheers,
Luke

Braze holes were exactly that, holes to let the excess braze through and create a secure and tight overlay, the method of manufacture and materials used these days differ, in the case of the 5th Lancers, you can expect to see rectangular shaped holes on the reverse of the lance pennon as well as the numeral, either the hole itself, or perhaps just simply an outline of it, if it has been completely filled with braze.

The 5th Lancers are very common badges and you should certainly have absolutely no issue, whatsoever, in buying an original example, however, they have been copied over the years and remain quite sort after, £50 is very little for an original these days.

Can you show a photograph of the example you mention please?
