Royal Naval Air Service
Hi all putting this thread here and asking if the collar badge is original looks good? The Cloth (Chief Petty Officers) with Gilding Metal Eagle/Albatross, faces opposite way to that normally seen but looks good to the rear! ?? Why was it that a badge like this was used? Is this a good badge and any information on these would be appreciated.
The last badge I would ask your opinions on this also, this did not come with the little grouping! Last edited by billy; 24-05-18 at 06:12 PM. |

I am no expert, so expect to have my ears boxed, but . .
the newer looking PO's badge would make me nervous. |

Thanks Bewley, and could well be Phil!

Billy,
I believe all the badges are bad. The 2 PO's badges are clearly made up and the quality of the RNAS collar is very poor. regarsd

I have searched through at least a hundred photos of the RNAS where OR cap badges are evident and I have never seen any with the RNAS eagle - they have all been anchors. The one shown in Billy's post that Bewley has doubts about actually belongs to me and I have doubted it since always. Firstly the method of manufacture of the crown cushion caused this doubt as I had only previously seen velvet cushions, however trawling the internet has produced the middle two examples (anchors) which are of similar construction. The next question mark concerns the jewels in the crowns. According to the RN aficionados, the central jewel being blue would date the manufacture to after 1920 - 2 years after the demise of the RNAS. Billy's badge is that of a Chief Petty Officer, a badge that was never used in the design of the later RAF versions of this badge. Furthermore his eagle is brass, not silver, and is flying the wrong way. It is similar in size to the one used by RNAS Pilots on their shoulder boards and did exist in both fly left and fly right versions. Admittedly his badge does have age to it but I am of the opinion that both his and mine are fakes or fantasy items. Anyone car to comment?

I don't like the look of the collar badge but it seems to have genuine age to it.
The badge on the left of your 4 looks to be of modern manufacture, the one on the right I would guess that an anchor has been removed and replaced by an eagle. IMO. Craig |

I have to agree that they all look spurious, except for the buttons.

Hi Craig, Alex thanks for the thouhts the Cloth badge has age and is easy enough to put an Eagle on and remove Fouled Anchor, was it done for Military usage? no idea but again its been there a long time and collar actually looks nicer in the hand!
But all being returned tomorrow and a chance to meet the dealer goes by "Feckle" and cannot rate the guy enough, (especially with the Thread ongoing about missing badges and being sold on again!) I'm cutting me own throat here but he is sound as a pound you have a problem he'll refund and take stuff back, have won items, and he's held the item back whilst away as in this auction as was on holiday, so rest assured if bidding on his site! All the best billy |

I agree with Billy I have bought several nice original items from FECKLE and would recommend him. I would err in his favour as a genuine error-we all make them!

I think it is a great shame to see any cap badges ruined by a complete idiot.
