Default Boer War? St John's Ambulance Brigade?

Can anyone shed further light on the uniform worn in this photo which is believed to be that of an SJAB volunteer serving in the Boer War? The use of a metal chin chain rather than a leather one seems unusual

It has not been possible to get a better scan of the cap badge which may be the circular badge shown.

All help appreciated.
