Default Royal Artillery

Hi, does anyone know when the Royal Artillery, specifically the RHA stopped wearing pill box hats? Also what sort of pill box would a senior NCO have worn, would it have had gold lace on the hat band or coloured cloth, any photos would be appreciated, thanks for your help,

Paul

Major Campbell's Dress of the Royal Artillery says it ceased to be worn 1902 although the RA Band continued to wear it until 1908.
Senior NCOs had a gold lace band round the hat. Others had yellow worsted.

Cap, Forage, 1884-1902 [SSgt & Sgt RA & RHA]

Cork body 2½ inches high with a dark blue cloth cover, a band of gold Regimental lace 1⅜ inches wide, and a gold net button on the crown. Prior to 1902 the height was changed to 2⅝ inches.

Marc

Not exactly the same, but close enough to give you an idea.

And I believe that slight tapering form is correct for SNCOs whereas ORs had cylindrical.
