Default Otago Hussars

Hi all

I have been so fortunate as to have been the recipient of a forum members generosity, and I received this wonderful badge today!
I was wondering if anyone knew what the detail on the shield of the 5th Mounted Rifles (Otago Hussars) badge represents?

Cheers

Colin

Hello Colin,

I can't answer your question but would like to congratulate you on your new addition. And also a heartfelt 'well done that man' to the forum member who's generosity was instrumental in aiding you.

Cheerio,

Roy

Hi Colin,

Very nice badge you have. It consists of the coat of arms of Colonel Joseph Cowie Nichols who was their first commanding officer. Motto means Be Faithful.

Perhaps a Google search would explain the various components of the shield.

Cheers, Tinto

Thanks John and thanks James (for the badge and link! )

An emailed link and a search later this answers the question:

"The name Nichols was probably Greek. One part of the family arrived in Cornwall with the Romans in about 300AD. There are still descendants there. Another group arrived in England in 1066 with William of Normandy. Both coats of arms bear the arrowheads or "pheons" indicating that they were archers."

So it's pheons! Looks obvious when you know This also explains the "Fleur De Lis" on the shield, as a nod to the Normans.

Cheers

Colin

Cowie and Nichols are two families united together on one shield.
