South African Para Smock "Slangvel"
Carrying on with my recently re-located treasure chest. I'll attach some photos of a South African Para-smock. It's very distinctive, and obviously an SA development of the Denison smocks they would have used in WW2. When SA formed it's own airborne forces, the Paras were formed into 44 Para Brigade, with the battalions called "Parabats". The smocks got the nickname "Slangvel" or snakeskin.
There are only 2 badges on the smock, his name tape "INGMAN" over the right pocket and over the left pocket his basic parawings, but in a dark grey embroidery to match the grey reinforcing pads on the jacket. The shoulder flashes on the hangers were presumably re-cycled. Somewhere I've got pretty much a full set of the flashes worn on the shoulders (see post below) Ian H Last edited by ianh67military; 16-12-16 at 03:15 PM. |
