SAWAS = South African Womens Auxiliary Service
NS = National Service

and the Afrikaans :
SAVHD = Suid Afrikaanse Vroue Hulp Diens
ND = Nationale Diens

WWII womens voluntary service much like the UK WVS. Members wore bronze brooched badge on lapel and front of felt hat. A brown jacket and skirt was worn with rank indicated by a series of blue stripes. In civilian dress a brown brassard was worn with the design of the bronze badge embroidered in blue silk.

Senior officers wore same badge but in gilt on the cap and lapels.

Hi Simon,
Yes these are fairly common. If memory serves there are two numbers on the back of the badge. The lower number I believe represents the SAWAS command area and the higher number was the badge issue number. Unfortunately I dont think any record survived of who the badge was issued to, unless someone out there is aware of such a list!
