SAWAS = South African Womens Auxiliary Service
NS = National Service and the Afrikaans : SAVHD = Suid Afrikaanse Vroue Hulp Diens ND = Nationale Diens WWII womens voluntary service much like the UK WVS. Members wore bronze brooched badge on lapel and front of felt hat. A brown jacket and skirt was worn with rank indicated by a series of blue stripes. In civilian dress a brown brassard was worn with the design of the bronze badge embroidered in blue silk. Senior officers wore same badge but in gilt on the cap and lapels. Steven |

Hi Simon,
Yes these are fairly common. If memory serves there are two numbers on the back of the badge. The lower number I believe represents the SAWAS command area and the higher number was the badge issue number. Unfortunately I dont think any record survived of who the badge was issued to, unless someone out there is aware of such a list! Steven |
