WAAC - Womens Auxilliary Army Corps
The Scottish Horse was a yeomanry unit Well worth you investing in a book. Suggestion - to start with - Military Badge Collecting by John Gaylor - get the latest edition you can Mike |

I believe the bronzed WAAC badge should have been fitted with blades. As there is no sign of them on your badge it may be unfinished item.

The naval button with Queen Victoria's crown is interesting - the letters A N or more likely A D appear unusual. It may be worth posting this in the Naval section if you get no luck in this part of the forum

Mike B I'm not an idiot, you will not find that Scottish horse button in any Gaylor or any other book, and the WAAC is also an unpublished pattern.

FLH - with it being found in South Africa - points in the direction of a 'Light Horse' unit - whatever the F is

The FLH title could be for the Frontier Light Horse, a South African unit that operated in the 2nd Boer War.

Fonmon -
I can not let your comment pass without a comment ... Merely suggesting a book would describe background of the unit, which you appeared to lack in asking for an 'identification'. As it says 'Scottish Horse' I can not understand why you asked for identification. In fifty years of collecting I am still learning, and continually add to my library to learn more - you appear shocked at the suggestion to buy a book - that puzzles me ... my own opinion view is that that Research, Research and more Resarch is what makes a good collector. It may be more helpful to be more clear in your request for help. I was not aware that I was addressing anyone other than a novice. Mike |

The WAAC badge, I understand, was made to be sewn in place.

OK Mike we'll put this behind us. I've been collecting all militaria for over 40yrs. My Glamorgan Archive runs into many hundreds of items, medals, badges, photographs and a variety of other odds and sods. The items I've posted in this section are some of the non Welsh oddities that have come into my hands over years.

The Scottish Horse button is not the recognised pattern for the British Yeomanry Regiment of that name but I have a vague recollection that there was another 'Scottish Horse' that was a Transvaal volunteer unit. Your button could possibly be for this earlier unit.
I may well be way off the mark, apologies if so! Roger |

Fonmon - this forum is a mine of information, I now appreciate your position and experience. I like to help all collectors - new starters and the more experienced. I have always been grateful for the help I receive - not least through this forum. Looking forward to the replies to your questions, and hoping you have more puzzles in your collection to discuss ... always interesting. My field of specialism has been fairly narrow for the last 30 years [WW2 British (and Inter Allied) Commandos / Irregular Forces], but I still enjoy learning about broader military subjects, and other specialist areas.
All the best Mike. |

Many thanks re clarification of 'The Scottish Horse' button - shows things can be very different from what they first appear to the uninitiated (yours truly), and how much there is to know about this subject.
