Clare Balding and the Liverpool Pals

I think "Who Do you think you are " is one of the most interesting programmes on the box ( not surprising when you compare it with some of the other dross ) but it was particularly interesting last night to discover that Clare Balding`s Great Grandmother was Lady Victoria Stanley, daughter of the Earl of Derby.

The attached picture shows the Presentation of the hall marked silver Liverpool Pals badges. Lady Victoria passes the badges to her mother who then hands them to Lord Derby for presentation.

The caption also says that Lady Victoria is wearing a Pals badge but I was told many years ago that a number of badges were made in hall marked gold for presentation to the ladies associated with the raising on the battalions so Lady Victoria may well be wearing a gold badge.

I assume they would probably have the same London and/or Cheshire hallmarks?

PB, I watched this and I must admit it was of great interest, pity the Pals Btn was not given more air time, but when you think of what the family did or were involved with it is a job to put it all into one programme.

It is a pity more programmes of this calibre are not made, but I suppose it only appeals to a small portion of the viewers.

I assume that other than the metal and perhaps the fittings, the gold hm badges were identical to the hall marked silver ones and whilst I have seen a number of gold Liverpool Pals badges they have been smaller than the hm silver badges presented by Lord Derby.

I dont know if any of those made for the Ladies associated with the raising of the Battalions have ever surfaced. I presume they would, like the silver examples, have been made by Elkingtons.
