nice one speaking to an ex CO of the Regiment recently he told me these were a trial item bought in when the current POLYs style uniform was being bought in late 1950s early 60s ,[ soldiers didn't like the sandy and sandy banded beret] 1 SAS COY was wearing the maroon beret and wanted to switch to a sandy one, defence procurement had 1000s of these from the trial so SASR was formed in 1964 and took them on [ hence the sandy band].
These were worn through Vietnam into the 70s, a few turn up mint unissued now and then. Named used ones are pretty cool too!
