Georgian militia button?
Recently picked this up as part of a job lot. Can't find any reference to it in ay of Ripley's books, but thought that some of you guys might have a better idea!
It looks like '7 RVB' with a Georgian crown on top (see images). Any thoughts very gratefully received! |

Hi
I know little of Georgian military buttons, but from your photo the central letter appears to start with an upright stroke, not something I'd expect in a "V" - unless that was how they did them in those days? Graham

Looks like 7 RRB to me, I think there is a dent or scuff on the second R which distorts it slightly.

Thanks all. Looking at it in 'real life' I think it is a 'v' so the veterans battalions is a pretty good shout. I'll keep researching.

Hello,
Some years ago Bob Moodie wrote an article for "Button Lines" (the Journal of The British Button Society) on "Garrison, Reserve and Veteran Battalions" of the British Army. He illustrated, amongst others, buttons for the 4th, 5th, 10th and 11th Royal Veteran Battalions, all of which were identical to yours. He also illustrated a button for the 7th Royal Veteran Battalion but this had the title within a strap with 7 in the centre, surrounded by a wreath of laurel, obviously a variation. Similar variations were also shown for the 4th, 5th, 10th and 11th. I think it is a safe bet that this is for the 7th Royal Veteran Battalion probably dating between about 1804 and 1826. Hope this helps. Regards Roger |

I'm very pleased with these two, new to my collection and came with a East India Company button of a similar period, both are about 16mm.

Hello Rob
Some nice finds you have there. May I ask whether they were 'detected' by yourself? My two sons used to go metal detecting, years ago when they were very young, with a very primitive metal detector, and all they found were some used .303 shell cases. Not too bad until you appreciate that the cases were littered all over the place and you could just pick them up without the use of any equipment at all! There are some great button finds being made thanks to those with the patience to go metal detecting! Roger |

Hi Roger
No I "detected" these on ebay and there was no clue as to where they were found. I have done some detecting mostly on a field used as a rifle range in the Victorian period close to where I live but I have never found anything as good as this. Rob |
