Did we all see this up for auction today at Tennants. Any opinions.I didn`t bid on it.Auction house says people are dubious but then thats Auction houses and we know how great they are. They also have a Canadian 8th Recce Beret with badge and a group of badges that appears to include gilding metal and silver Leeds Pals cap badges as well as some other rare items.Pity i have a cast on my leg and couldnt get to the viewing.

Agree, for starters, why would one want to drill holes in a sample badge?

Fake lrdg pattern.
Just goes to show the lengths fakers and unscrupulous dealers will go to make money on these rare items. It also shows the lack of knowledge of many established auction houses or at least their lack of interest in not selling fakes.Unfortunately to many Auction houses the profit on a fake is as good as that on a real item, and i include most of the specialist Militaria auction houses in this group. I am so fed up with trolling through auction house catalogues just to see the same old crap in every sale, I`m sure being consigned by the same dealers.Yet idiots still buy them.

LOL, I've just noticed the sealing wax and ink "stamp" on the reverse, that's really made my day!

When I was sifting through the ex-Gaunt stock offloaded by the NAM I came across a few examples with holes drilled through, Tyneside Scottish 1st pattern and a 15th Hussars OSD from memory.

Through the fitments or through the badge itself?

Right through the badges themselves. The Tyneside Scottish went into the Bosleys postal auction, removed from pattern card was their description. I never got the 15th Hussars

Thank you, odd as the Tyneside Scottish and 15 Hussars badge have voids, as does the LRDG badge, which could equally be used for attaching them to cards, the reason why the holes were drilled in the first place.
If on a pattern card, was there a note not to drill the holes? Otherwise the badges produced from the pattern card all came with holes as well? Rgds, Thomas. |

Tennants LRDG
I posted the card onto the LRDG group page on FB where there are many proven authorities on LRDG and much more....opinion is somewhat divided and there maybe some credence to it before the 'its total bs' brigade bust out and certify it as so....there are three very similar cards in ownership and it is not entirely without precedence...so dont throw the baby out with the wadi water just yet....

Are "chess board" backed scorpions now considered to be a genuine circa WW2 badge?
I had thought this was the sign of reproduction. IMO.

LRDG titles
Its confused a fair few for sure......best way would be to carbondate the ink! Re the badge...if it was a prototype then who knows....anything goes....at least if they are fake it did not go for really silly money..still enough to be annoying though....it is just a weird mystery.....

Gents, please let's not kid ourselves that the badge on the card is anything else than a fake badge that has been put on a card with the purpose of deception.
Here is yet another example from the batch, that has been in my "black" collection of fakes for 15+ years. Indeed when I bought it it was sold to me as a fake. Keith
