I think it's a lovely Welch Regiment badge, I have one just like it with a small nick out of the 'dien' scroll so if you don't want it Spencer I'll have it

I'm not convinced with these solid back versions. I've had couple in the past but have taken them out of my collection. The quality of strike is very poor on the feathers with little definition. The three O.Rs examples I have kept are all much better quality and even the Indian made ones are better than the example shown in this thread, so why would the Regiment accept a poorer quality than that of the sealed patterns? It does need looking into but I would err on the fake at the moment. Cofion Kevin |

I know this is very much in your field so hold your opinion in very high regard. These certainly appear lower quality I won't argue that but mine as Spencer's does shows signs of bull on the front loss of definition from polishing, mine certainly has a lot of age to it seemingly much more than the 30 or 40 years which restrikes have been around. The slider is also very nice not the sort found on restrikes unless taken from an original badge and rebrazed IMO nor is it the sort of tapering one which appears on early restrikes which it would have to be so I believe they are OK and just from a different manufacturer. Its not necessarily wrong that they are solid backs without braze holes as technology moved on into the '30's and '40's. Quality seems to vary on the manufacturer and the circumstances like one of the original Black Watch badges with the die flaw under the Spinx's tablet yet that was put into production, in my opinion I think the badge is OK and probably from around the '30s in date as you do see Welch scrolls tagged on which would be the natural progression of manufacture. Just my opinion but your the expert here. All the best, Luke |
