Further to the above, I think a Fire Brigade badge is a good contender, although I have reservations about the shape of the flames, From what can be seen of the blades, they look typically continental and definitely not to be associated with Guards insignia.

Guards hospital badge
I think that Bosleys also sold a cap badge similar to this with the cross blackened, of course I may be totally wrong about this badge due to the fixings. A photo of the reverse would be useful.

Guards hospital badge
Well, from the look of things there was a similar fixing on the flames of the grenade now missing, I have had British and Colonial badges with double blades which this has, so my thoughts are this is a Guards hospital badge from the Boer War period.

Why can’t I find any record or images of it? Could you advise where I may be able to get clarification or are you sure? Thanks |

I have just found I have two examples - sorry for no images - the cross is applied on both, rather than impressed each of mine has two distinct blades at reverse of lower flames - one east and one west.
Reference: Bosleys 20 January 2010, lot 245. Gilding metal in appearance. Bosleys 25 January 2012, lot 475. Possibly coated as OSD - BUT Gilding metal reverse No of flame tips: 17 on each (as usual with each representing a letter of 'FIRST OF FOOT GUARDS' - as Grenadier Guards). Always great to have a talking point such as this and I appreciate opinions will be divided. Personally I have some doubts as laid out my earlier post (14), although I was surprised to find my badges have two blades each (Mine look to be better quality than the example in this thread but who knows?) Could the badge shown in post no. 1 be missing an applied cross? It doesn't appear to be nearly finished in that area.

Just added an image of Bosley 25 January 2012 example (post 24 above) - just checked - hammered at £275
Hi Leigh - The reverse shows no indentation to the ball of grenade All the best Mike |

These cap badges to the Guards Field Hospital are IMO unofficial, so who's to say which one is the genuine one, they both might be genuine ?! Just saying.

Superb thread. To add my tuppenceworth - I’d agree with Andy that this was probably an unofficial field modification. Kind regards, Sean

I would agree - there is scope for variation given that indeed the adaptation is probably unofficial. Blades to the reverse is - in my limited and out of date experience - quite unusual for Grenadier Guards. I can only ever remember seeing a couple of standard Bze OSD bladed examples with plain balls (never seen an OSD Bze with cypher/monogram). Specialist Guards collectors will be better informed than I am these days - my interest turned to Commando etc about 30 years ago although I still like to add unusual items to the rest of my collection.
Always interested in learning more. A brief internet search has failed to provide me with any more leads on Guards Hospital - hoping someone else has better luck. Mike |

This Bosley's auction of 6th September 2017 (item 278) is for a bronzed die stamped version of the badge although from the illustration it doesn't look bronzed.
279 is for a pair of cast brass collar badges. https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/a...f-a7d600b90c53 Last edited by leigh kitchen; 05-05-18 at 03:43 PM. |
