Default Silver War Badge

I have a Silver War Badge with a vertical pin bearing a number (444860) stamped on the reverse side. My research to date shows that my badge was issued between September 1916 and March 1918.

I know that the appropriate records are held at the National Archives and that they are rather annoyingly not available online.

Can anyone please let me know if there is another way of finding out who was issued the badge without a visit to the NA?

Hope someone can help,

David.

There used to be a guy with records of them, but he died sometime ago, around the 2001 mark IIRC, he could have told you easily, however I think you need to now go to the archives, it's a PITA.

I haven't heard the expression for a while, but yes, a very large and expensive PITA...

Its a wonder someone doesnt have a web site and call it something like silverwarbadge.com, take a digital camera down to the TNA photograph every page from the roll, then charge the visitors to the web site three quid for a look up. Easy money in my opinion.

...and some extra solid state memory. Once you get into the flow of "click, turn" you would be surprised at how quickly you get through the pages. Get yout tripod set out and your remote. I know several people who have all the entries for the regiment which they collect.

If someone did set up such a web site they wouldnt need to go to work anymore. If the site was fully automated, well that would be just showing off!

They would have to work................to pay off all the fines for copyright infringement, by charging to use it, they would get a tug in no time, however, if they approached the TNA they could possibly get permission for a hefty royalties cheque.......

One merely has to do is change the format. Example: some guy has set up a web site selling medal rolls on CD. These documents are held by the NA and one would assume governed by all the same rules and legislation regarding copyright. There is no difference between these medal rolls and the war badge roll.

The workings of the web site would be easy a child could set it up. All it would required is one PHP submission form to begin with. The rest of the content would be the history of the SWB to get achieve search engine visibility.

Ahhhh, so it no longer works that the intellectual property is copyrighted then, just the format the info is in? I'm just asking as I have some SWB pages, as I'm sure others do, perhaps we could start a db???

PHP is a language frequently used to write the front end of databases on the internet or in this case submission forms.

A submission form is what you used to sign up to join this forum. Into a submission form you type your details e.g. the silver war badge number you wish to research. This information is then sent to my email box and then I reply by sending you the relevant page of the SWB roll attached to the email. That of course is a manual system. An automated system would contain a back end database that would automatically email you the relevant page or allow you to chose the relevant page for yourself.

If everyone who has a page submits it we may build a decent DB or at least have a rough area to say, it is likely that your man was in X regiment.
