Is this the same button that was for sale on ebay earlier this week? The photos look to be exactly the same.

It was but I had a change of heart in selling. It doesn't fit normally with my collection of early buttons but as I've never seen anything like it before I might hang onto it.

In that case there is no point me referring to that button as another example!

I've seen this 'United East India Company' pattern of button before (there is one illustrated here - http://dorsetsea.swgfl.org.uk/html/g...ic_button2.htm) but I don't think there is one illustrated or described in Poulsom's books, possibly too early to be considered "Indian Army" as such.

Roger

PS Not thinking straight this afternoon! If I'm right (and this isn't my strongpoint so somebody please correct me if wrong) this button would be for the Dutch East India Company and obviously wouldn't be in any books about British Indian Army buttons!

I have just bought a rather distorted pewter example, about 21mm and in need of a clean but I'm not sure I dare?

I think any attempt to clean it will do damage, unless you put it under a microscope and take out each individual sand grain.
All details are visible, so better leave it as it is.
