Default Can anyone identify?

Hi, I don't know how many countries use anchor badges but it is a lot. Is there any way of recognising the British variety?
The silver bullion badge is 47mm and the gold bullion 49mm, the latter cut off a larger badge. Was this size badge ever worn on its own? Thanks.

Knowing very little about this style of badge, I would hazard a guess that the silver badge may have an American connection. My reasoning is that the USN Petty Officer's badge also has a rope fouling the anchor which forms a loop at the bottom a bit like this one but not quite the same, but it may still have an US connection.
Cheers,
Alex
