Herbert Vipond, Northumberland.
Good afternoon.
Here's one for you clever chaps to research: Herbert Vipond. Probably born Middlesborough. Lived High Shield Farm, Hexham, Northumberland, volunteered for service in The Great War, probably in 1914. Regiment or arm of service unknown, but almost certainly Army. Survived the War, and died in 1948. My guess is NH, RA or NF, but I am probably completely wrong. Any ideas? If you get a result I will pass it on to the family. Enjoy. S.T. |

The only Herbert Vipond to have served in the army during the Great War was from Manchester and served in the 9th Battalion of the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, there was no-one of that name served in the Royal navy either !
I'll keep looking ! PL |

I did a quick check on Ancestry for Herbert Vipond. There were 113 results and one (a Joseph Herbert Vipond) is listed as born in 1893 in Northumberland , Newcastle. A search in the Medal Rolls indicated that a man called Joseph Vipond served in the Northumberland Fusiliers. Is this possibly the one?.....many people use their middle names in everyday life and so this seems a good possibility. A J.H.Vipond is listed in the Medal Rolls having served in the ASC.

Herbert Vipond, Northumberland.
Good evening.
Gentlemen, how brilliant are you both? Fantastic result. I posted the enquiry having stumbled across an article in The Hexham Courant of 11 July 2014 about one Herbert Vipond, who lost his horse to the Army, volunteered, and bumped into his horse again. Warhorse writ large! Don't ask me to post a link to the article: their search system defeats me! As it happens Vipond is a name associated with Cumbria, but I would bet he ended up in the NF's or the ASC: after the war he became a milkman I recall. Do we know which Bn. of the NF's? My bet? 4NF. Enjoy. S.T. |

The Hexham Wesleyan Methodist Roll of Honour lists a Herbert Vipond and a Norman Vipond........was Norman the brother of Herbert? In addition, a N.P.Vipond is listed in the 4th Northumberland Fusiliers.....that is as much as I can find. It was often the case that brothers joined different battalions.

Herbert Vipond, Northumberland.
Good evening again.
How do you do that? Brilliant! I do not know the answer to the question, but I know a man who might. Of course, 4NF was the local TA Bn., one of whose descendants has written and published a Record of all the badges of the Fifth Fusiliers. A book incidentally which some Members of this Forum have purchased and studied carefully, and some evidently have not (You know who you are.)! Any more input gratefully received and acknowleged. Herbert Vipond, Northumberland.
Good morning.
Many thanks. But, as I mentioned in my earlier Post, he survived the War and died in 1948. S.T. |
