I've never seen one of those before, and there's nothing on any of the websites depicting RAF badges. Could it stand for Fighter Reconnaissance? A new one to me. The backing looks like others I've seen that are WW2, like a Bomb Aimer brevet I have.

B.K.C. Scott's 'Dictionary of military abbreviations' has FR as either Fighter Reconnaissance or Forest Rangers.

If it's Fighter Reconnaissance, who would have worn it, and when? Most fighter reconnaisance aircraft only carried the pilot, unless it was post-war.

Could it be a sweetheart badge, made by a private tailor with the centre letters representing the males initals?

I just found a note I'd made to myself of a couple of other RAF brevets - CM or CT for RAF Crewman. I believe someone posted them a while back. Never saw anything to confirm them either, so possibly fantasy.

Hadn't thought of that. If so, why haven't we seen the FR brevet before? How many in-flight refuellers are there anyway? Enough to warrant a separate brevet? Mind you, there can't be too many drone pilots either, and they have their own wings now.

OK , just to add to the mix .........I really do not think this is a modern fake or copy the construction looks correct ? the pics could be better but the backing is good with what looks like remains of the old black paper some times seen on early war wings ?

My comment will be `FRANCE` worn by French air crew who escaped to Britain after the fall of France ............. !

Seriously , What about some ground based trade ? would they be allowed a wing ? F.R ` Fixed Radar `

I've never heard of France having such a brevet, but who am I to say? The structure and colouring look to be British; the Aussies have a blue wreath, some of the Canadian brevets have a King's crown, and I'm not sure about NZ. I think they might be more like the RAF model. S.Africans had a coat of arms or something in the pilot's wings (not sure about other aircrew).

As to a ground-based type wearing a half-wing, it seems unlikely. The only non-aircrew who are honourary aircrew are the PJI's.

It does look authentic, but then again, so do many other dubious badges. That being said, if it is real, how come we haven't seen it before?
