Grenadier Guards 1871
I am asking for opinions on what the Grenade ( Cap Badge ) is made of, i.e. a metal or not. Also wether the type of Grenade is the same or similar to those in Kipling and King Volume 1.
I am not trying to discredit Kipling and King, but i believe that the Grenade in Kipling and King was worn prior to 1898. Many thanks Andy

Not Grenadier Guards i know but I'm trying to find out when the cap star was first worn as a cap badge also. Dress Regs are hard to find ( i've tried the National Army Museum and British Library ) i've come across this picture by Charles Stadden, its dating the cap star 1875 where as Kipling and King are dating it 1898. Any comments anyone.
Many Thanks Andy

I'd like to know the answer to this as well. I am unsure about the date of origin for the Grenade and the capstar.

Yes John, i,m going to badger Gary Gibbs and Major GVA Baker ( Regimental Adjudant ) about this. I'm finding it hard to find Dress regs 1864,74 ,83, so i'm going to see if i can find some old standing orders. I have standing orders 1865 which mentions 2 types of grenades cap badges, but not what there made of only the cost. There are photo's dating back to 1860 which i believe clearly show a metal type grenade badge, but it would be nice to have it in black and white.
Thanks for taking an interest Andy

Badge dates
Andy, the photo is definitely 1871 and not 1891, the badge looks like it's made from metal to me and while K&K give dates for badges these may not always be accurate.
Much knowledge has come to light since K&K dipped their respective toes in the water. Rob |
