Royal Norfolk Regt with spear.
Standard Royal Norfolk Britannia brass cap badge, but the trident has been changed to a spear, by filling the two sides of the trident.
I have been told this was done , but this is the first one I have found. I can think of no reason why this has been done, unless it is to make the badge look like an older one. |

Options for change? Spears are cheaper than tridents.

That would be quite a stretch though for whoever had that in mind, since as I understand it the 'Britannia' figure with trident dates from circa 1829-44 as found on the Bell top shako badge, with the figure with trident appearing on new colours presented in 1848. Clearly that was a good fifty years before 'modern' cap badges evolved for Field Service and Service Dress head gear.
