RAC helmet flash question
Hi
Here is an RAC Mk2 helmet (I think) with I am told a Mk4 chinstrap. But what is the red Square painted on the side? Cheers Sean |

Does it have a trace of white paint - a horizontal strip - above the red square? Mike

Info came from Jean Bouchery's 'The British Soldier from D-Day to VE day', a book with many flaws. I take it this is one of them?

Not necessarily. It features in "World War 2 Military Vehicle Markings" by Terence Wise. He notes that "Officially these emblems were to be red for the senior armoured regiments within an armoured brigade, then yellow with blue for the junior regiment. If a fourth regiment existed it used green Independent regiments used white. In fact, this system was not always adhered to, possible because of regiments being moved from one brigade to another" within the same division]. Mike

We never had em in the Bays........and we were senior Regt. in 2AB.....I doubt if ever used as Mike infers owing to movement of regiments..
