RASC advices

Can anyone help me to identify those RASC variations ?
Second is gilding metal

Which are usually the makers of RASC badges ?

What you have are 2 variations of the post 1938 RASC badge. The only difference is the placing of the GVI cypher.

One is lower than the other and sits where the GV sat of the previous George's cypher.

The higher cypher is the one used on the later plastic badges.

As a huge Corps there would have been several manufacturers.

Vincent, the left-hand badge is the original GVIR pattern introduced in 1936, it has the incorrect pattern of Royal Cypher with the letters from the earlier GVR pattern badge and the V changed to VI. These early badges were soon followed in late 1936/early 1937 by the correct pattern on the right. The early badges were not withdrawn and were worn up until a new pattern of GVIR cap badge, with a raised crown, was introduced in 1949.

As there are so many of these original 1936 pattern badges around, with the incorrect cypher pattern, I am of the opinion that the dies for them were re-used in WW2. Given the massive increase in the number of RASC personnel at that time, there would have been a great demand for the badges. The use of obsolete dies would have been nothing new after all.

Hello Gents & Vincent,

I have attached an image of my badges in their display case, these are OR's (other ranks issued) with a couple of Officers added (EviiiR & Gurkha)

Most of the WW1 & 2 badges were "not" maker marked but some were, it was to reduce manufacturing time & costs (I believe)
