From a very good source in the RMP world.
The BBC approached RMP RHQ who in turn provided their top guy to help, highlighting loads of inaccuracies in the script. They offered to help with n equipment etc The BBC then approached a military historian called Jonathan Walker who writes books on military history. Several about Aden. Read about him here Biography – Jonathan Walker The BBC then get an ex serving para to train the actors on a bootcamp for just a week before the camara rolls. The ex para also points out all the things that are wrong which RHQ had highlighted months in advance. Both RHQ and the ex serving bootcamp trainer are ignored over the military historian. Ex para is sent home after training actors for just a few days. Turns out the military historian had never served and through the whole Six months the BBC was filming this crap they never had a real "time served military" advisor on set. Who makes these decisions? Scroll down to the crew section on this official BBC link and you see who the military advisor is named as http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/med.../the-last-post Have the BBC been stung by a walter Mitty |

I flicked through a TV mag a week or two ago, it had an article about (I think) the writer of this stuff, apparently his dad served in Aden & he'd lived there as a pad-brat.
He wanted to break away from the military stereotypes, including the perception that all army officers have moustaches. He knew the realities of the Aden unpleasantness. I didn't bother to read the article, sneered at the ludicrous photos accompanying it & don't watch the thing, but do I take it that he hasn't done a very good job then? |

They definitely managed that. One of the very few things they got right.

Here he is the BBC Last Post Military and historical advisor trying to justify himself.
http://www.sidmouthherald.co.uk/news...rama-1-5234308 However if you watch Our girl also on the BBC they are using the correct badges so his excuse does not stand muster. |

No Peter, it’s just ‘Pistol (or side-arm) Order’ of 37 Pattern Web Equipment. There were various other ‘orders’ such as ‘musketry’, ‘marching’, etc. as you probably know.

I apologise Peter, I did not perceive the irony. I did ponder as I was making the post as to whether you already knew but took things at face value.

In contrast, Jonathan accepts a certain amount of artistic licence, saying: “You have to accept that drama is drama. This isn’t a documentary.”
He got that right then. What it is, is PAINFUL. I have given up on it, but my wife watches it and so I hide behind the newspaper. Contrast this with REDCAP of about 10 years ago ..... much of it in BFG and very very near to kosher in mood and locations. [Mind you, I am old enough to remember the black and white REDCAP with John Thaw, complete with moving and shaking walls and stairs, almost all filmed in a very makeshift studio]. Grim even in those days. |
