As at 15 Jan 38 (according to the RA Seniority and Distribution List February 1938) 98th (Surrey and Sussex Yeomanry, Queen Mary's) Army Fd Bde RA(TA) comprised the following Batteries (Locations in []):
389 (Sussex Yeomanry) Bty [Brighton)
390 (Sussex Yeomanry) Bty [Chichester]
391 (Sussex Yeomanry) Bty [Clapham Park, SW4]
392 (Sussex Yeomanry) How Bty [Clapham Park SW4]
Sounds illogical to me. Another source , "Three Men in a War" by John Gascoigne-Pees, gives the Orbat of 98th Field Regiment RA (TA) (Surrey and Sussex Yeomanry) in September 1939 as just two Batteries, each of three x four gun Troops:
391 (Sussex Yeomanry) Bty and 392 (Surrey Yeomanry) Bty.
When Fd Regts changed to a three Bty organisation 471 Fd Bty was formed to become 98 Fd Regt's third battery. Whether the latter saw themselves as Sussex or Surrey Yeoman is not recorded!

In 1939 the TA units were duplicated so I think the 2 missing batteries (389 and 390) went to form 144th Field Regiment, Royal Artillery (Surrey and Sussex Yeomanry, Queen Mary's.

Correct. And 144 Fd Regt acquired its third battery (526 Fd Bty later redesignated 552 Fd Bty) on 2 Jan 43 by which time the Regiment was in Persia. Incidentally in January 1940, 144 Fd Regt gave birth to 74 Med Regt RA which, wearing its unique Broken Spur sign, fought in 2 AGRA all the way from Tunisia to the River Po. The Yeomen of Surrey and Sussex were very well travelled.

So several units all with some sort of lineage; with individual batteries possibly wearing one of 3 badges all at the same time (and in one CO's case possibly 2 at once): What's not confusing about that!.

Default Pictures of war record

Seems like my dad started in 389 Battery but changes to 391 battery just before the BEF. He was 98th not 144th.
