Default Cap badge

I have photo of my partners father with a "forage" cap.
This has what appears to be a harp with a crown on the top. We are trying to trace the regiment he was in, sorry this is very vague. The only other information we have is that he was evacuated from Dunkirk, along with thousands of other people. Any help or information would be appreciated

Hello Peter1946, welcome to the Forum. Your account is active and open for posts.
Your image doesn't appear in your post. It would be most helpful to assist with your request.

Hello Peter, could be Ulster Rifles or London Irish.
Maybe others will be along with other suggestions, a picture would help.
Cheers Tony.

The 2nd Bn RUR were the only ones at Dunkirk with a cap badge like that.

The North Irish Horse were in UK in 1940 and the King's Royal Irish Hussars were also not part of the BEF in France but were in UK then deployed to North Africa.

London Irish likewise did not get to France but were I UK in 1940.

London Irish badge with what would of been a green hackel worn with it.

Thank you Alan - Does this mean that he wasn't at Dunkirk?

OK so the plot thickens! It would appear that the London Irish were not at Dunkirk. However, we have found a letter written by my partners dad saying 'I was called up for service in the army in January 1940 and after wearing army boots for a while I was confronted with serious pain trouble with my feet, mainly due to the fact that I had with other soldiers to withdraw from Ypres, Belgium to Dunkirk walking all the way' could he have changed regiments?

Yes, The London Irish was a Territorial battalion affiliated to the Royal Ulster Rifles so either he started in the London Irish and then joined the sister RUR battalion or vice versa.

if he was called up then he may have been a pre-war territorial.

My Granddad was a regular with the Royal Ulster Rifles and went through Dunkirk with them. He was then transferred to the London Irish Rifles which, as has been mentioned, was the TA battalion of the RUR and quite a few men transferred from one to the other. He then went to North Africa with the LIR in 1942 and then on to Italy.

Regards.

Carl
