John Bailey, now sadly deceased, was a former Royal who served, inter alia, at the liberation of Hong Kong in 1945. He was a long term and highly respected member of the MHerS and an expert in RM cloth insignia of World War 2. Mike

Referring to your post '22' above - I imagine new member '1664' is John Rawlinson author of the Royal Marine Historical Society Special Publication commemorating 350 years service of the Corps i.e. 'Personal Distinctions, 350 years of Royal Marines Uniform and Insignia'. This work has been referred to in several previous threads. John - if it is you (alias 1664) - welcome aboard, good to have you here. All the best Mike |

Agree, the quality doesn't feel right and the diagonal stitched badges are so common 117Bde must have had 100,000s of men. John |

Irv,
Many thanks for the kind endorsement. With such a wide subject I'm happy to acknowledge the book is limited and I was very aware that understanding of RM WW2 cloth insignia is far from complete - so great to see conversations like this one taking place Yours John |

Hi John,
Sometimes it seems that I come across as argumentative but it is only to increase our knowledge. I work on the principle that if it doesn't look right it may not be I always need the evidence to prove the fact. It is good to have someone who is willing to put to paper facts/understandings of Royal Marine items. We are always learning and I am always willing to be persuaded on any enquiry into information on these items. I have been wrong before The badge in question has too many red flags (IMO) to be worthy of putting into a RM collection. (For the moment anyway) Thanks again John. Regards Irv |
