Default Aircraft technician trade badge

I was following a thread on a REME website when the question of Aircraft Technician trade badges was raised as many ATs had never seen or worn one, the final outcome was a message being sent to the REME Museum to clarify the point . The following reply was received.

The Aircraft Technician badge was introduced under the authority of a War Office letter in 1959. It was worn by both branches of the trade, Air frames and engines (now Aircraft Technician) and electronics, instruments and radio, (now Avionics Technician). Prior to its introduction these tradesmen were qualified to wear the hammer and tongs badge.

I hope this helps. All the best, Brian Baxter, Technical Historian

Another point raised was that on getting a third stripe all trade badges were no longer worn except by army recruiters who were encouraged to wear any badges to which they were entitled.
