Default REME 1st Patt Chromed Buttons

I'm not really a button person, but saw these on eBay and got them as they are unusual. REME 1st pattern 1" dia buttons, brass but have been chrome plated. No maker marks. The silver cap badge was reputedly worn by personnel attached to RAC units, could these be for the same reason? Any other ideas? Thanks in advance.

I posted this over 4 years ago, with no response. I'd forgotten about it, but now giving it another go. Chromed buttons. I've not seen any others since the original post, so this to me is still a mystery. Band maybe?

That's all I could think of, but they're officers quality?

Hello John

I thought I had seen these discussed (not just your opening post) before on the Forum. Perhaps not and my memory is failing - like every other bit of me!

I remember these from ebay and put in a bid but it must have been you that outbid me. I thought at the time that they were unusual and was thinking along the lines of the comments already received - band or possibly piper, if any REME unit ever had a piper!

Given that they seem to be officer quality and chromed rather than white metal (more the norm for band/piper at this period) I do wonder whether they were privately chromed after production (and after they had been replaced by the later pattern) and used on a civilian blazer.

I have certainly not seen their like before or since.

Roger

Thanks for your input everyone. Given the uniqueness of these, I suppose we will never know the answer for sure, so until some other evidence presents itself I'm going with Roger's quote above.
