Hi
I am a new member & new to British Army badge collecting, & in need of some advice for a beginner, my first question, was there a reason why many British Army cap badges do not have a Makers Mark, also can anyone recommend a book for British Army Badges

RGJ,
welcome, hope you enjoy the Forum.

As for your questions I would in the first instance get yourself a copy of Badge Collecting by John Gaylor. It does have some errors but it was written a long time ago, but ideal for the beginner and you should get one off eBay for about £10..

The War Department gave instructions to manufacturers during periods not to mark their wares, the information and dates are here on the Forum somewhere, I'm sure someone will source it for you!

Best Regards

Andy

Hi and welcome RGJ

I can also add, that Andy (above) is one of the good guys in the Dealer world. You can buy from him with confidence.

** This is an unpaid advert (but I am open to offers Andy....lol)**

In all seriousness, his badges come with free advice and an amazing tolerance for novice questions.

Cheers, Tim

If you look at www.abebooks.co.uk, you can pick up a copy starting at £0.79 + postage.

Hi and welcome!
You'll find the members here very knowledgeable and willing to help with even the most basic of questions! In addition to Gaylor, I personally found Doyle's books very helpful as they include colour photos and quite a bit of handy information. True, there are couple of mistakes in the book, as in Gaylor, but nothing that should deter you from getting them

Good luck

Colin

Welcome Andy. Depending on which period you're interested in, I can recommend both 'Cap badges of the British Army 1939 - 1945' by G.L.D. Alderson and 'British Army Badges' by Lt Col Robin Hodges, which features all badges as worn around 2005.
Eventually you'll need both Kipling & King 'Head-Dress badges of the British Army' volumes.

Rgds, Thomas.
