Default Royal Engineers Divional Marked Brodie Helmet

Hi all, I was privileged to be able to examine a fantastic WW1 Brodie helmet marked to the Royal Engineers at a local museum a few days ago. The helmet is in great shape. The outside is painted a grey/blue colour with sand texturing. Over this texturing is a stenciled Royal Engineers to the front and the reverse has a black stenciled Spade. Under this sign is evidence of a previous Spade stencil that was much larger. Any ideas out there as to the significance of the Spade stencil?

Greg

Hi Greg,
If I remember rightly the spade was for the 12th eastern division WW1,others in the know will confirm for sure

Correct and stated to have been seen on occasions "charged with the regimental crests of various units in the Division" Mike
